Kim Kardashian

I’m not usually much for celebrity news (if its not fashion related), but KIm Kardashian’s new music endeavors have surprised and disgusted me. Kim has no ties to the music industry.. unless you count that one thing (*side eye* at Ray-J’s sex tape) So why has she decided that she should give it a go? It seems like all celebrities think music needs their help… and they decide to dabble. As a music lover, I’d prefer if NON musically-inclined members of the celeb status would stay away from music all-together. Aren’t there enough un-talented people in the industry as it is? Or do celebrities not listen to the radio or something?? Whatever the reason is for (untalented) celebs to get into music, is NOT a valid one. I’d much rather watch the beautiful Ms. Kardashian on tv and see her in magazines. I’ll pass on the ear torture.

As many of you know, Alexander McQueen is, hands-down, my favorite designer of all-time, ans I was devastated by his death this past February. To my surprise, and dismay, Sarah Burton ( who worked alongside McQueen for 15 years) has taken the position of Head Designer of the McQueen house. Its not that I believe that she is incompetent, but rather simply incapable to recreate that sharp edge that the brand’s name-sake was able to produce. Although I didn’t find the Spring 2011 RTW collection to be unsuccessful by any means, it has definitely changed. Taking nothing away from Burton’s talent, its her gender that creates the clear difference between her first collection and the last one completed by McQueen himself. The tallcoat, a McQueen signature, she softened. Unfinished edges and slashed, relaxed shoulders just didn’t give viewers that McQueen edge. Even the staging (for which McQueen was known widely for) was softer. The collection’s founder didn’t not have enough hand (or any hand for that matter) in it. His genius will never be matched or duplicated.

Givenchy certainly set the mood for its goth inspired Spring 2011 RTW collection when they used the “psycho-goth” band Salem for the show’s intro. Leopard, the star of the show, made appearances in just about every corner of this collection. Hovering over a chiffon overskirt, devore relief on a jacket, and even as a graphic on a pair of pants, the fast cat made her fierce-ness (and glamour) known. Of course, keeping with the Gothic theme, there were the ever-present zippers and straps, but they were almost all softened by sheer layers that head designer Riccardo Tisci used on almost everything. That small detail gave the collection an overall ghastly feel. I’m praying this collection chooses to haunt my closet this fall…. (Floridian situation)
